It’s Thursday the 7th of February, and I hope you have been enjoying some great New Year’s Day celebrations. Let me know what you’ve been doing.

Chinatown, in the centre of London, has been partying too, but the really big celebrations aren’t until Sunday 10th February. On that day it’s expected that up to 300,000 people will come to see a big parade of Chinese dancers, singers, acrobats, and artists which will move from The Strand to Trafalgar Square. The square is the main open air space in London where rallies and concerts take place.

Sunday is the start of a month long celebration of everything Chinese in London. The festival is called “China in London” and you’ll be able to see artists at work, musicians performing traditional and modern music as well as lots of drama and dance. If you are coming to London it is well worth seeing.

There’s a special website devoted to the festival, and you can look at what is going on here:

Some of you were asking if I could recommend some books that reveal the world in a very real way.

One British travel writer is Eric Newby. He seems to have travelled around the whole world, and seen hundreds of exciting places. Somehow he manages to write in such a way that you really do feel you are with him in the country he is writing about.  Here’s what some people have been saying about the sort of things Eric writes about.

Another impressive travel writer is from Australia. Peter Moore is a little bit different from the others, as he does a lot of his touring by motorbike! Travelling in that way means he has a unique view of the places he visits. Some of his experiences are really funny, so you might like to try and find some of his books.

He’s got a website too.

Bill Bryson is a very funny author who has written a lot about Britain. His descriptions of the hilarious things he encounters are great, and his most famous book “Notes from a Small Island” is still very popular, years after he wrote it.

Let me know if you are able to get hold of any of these books in China, and what you think of them. Do they really tell you something new about a country? Do you think an author can really give you a truly honest and accurate account of their travels?

So, authors can give us a real or “unreal” view of somewhere. Talking about things that are unreal – what about films? There are plenty of movies that deal with “unreal” things and we call those fantasy movies. I am a fan of horror films, and I’d like to know what type of films you are fans of.

And what about film locations? One of my favourite pastimes is to go looking for the places where films have been made. Last weekend I went out into the countryside around London to find some film locations used in my favourite horror movies, and I was lucky to find this place:

It is a grand old country house just north west of London called “Hampden House”, and it was used in many horror films.  I think it looks quite scary, and would look even more so at night! But, what do you think? Tell me your feelings, can you see why it would be good to use in a horror film?

OK, I must rush, but we’re looking forward to hearing from you!

Happy New Year again!

Bye.
John.
