Welcome back. It’s Valentine Day and I hope you are having a wonderfully romantic time! Before I begin, I know there is one of you reading the blog who is feeling rather sad on this special day. Well, you have all our support and we hope you find love and happiness very soon. It’s not easy when relationships do not go well, or you finally break up. No one really knows why some relationships don’t work out, some are not meant to be. It hurts horribly when things do not go right, but eventually you do feel better. It really takes time to get through these feelings, and I think it’s true when people say “time is a great healer”. Good luck, it will all get better! We were having quite an interesting discussion about “the daily grind”. Great to read some of your honest answers. I suppose if we are honest about things in our life which are not going very well, we can really understand ourselves better and start to change things. We can then really take control of our lives and futures. One of you talked about “having a passion in life”. How appropriate for Valentines Day! Maybe I should talk about my passions in life. So here goes! I love the radio, and I collect them too! I have quite a big collection of old ones which are great, and you can get them very cheaply.Fringe theatre. These are small theatres we have all over the country, which usually can only seat a few people. They are normally very experimental and put on some very thought provoking plays. I’ve been involved in making the sound effects for various plays in the past, which I love. Travel. We have discussed this in the past, but what I actually like is the actual journey you make in order to get somewhere. I once met a woman who said she never really liked arriving at a destination, she just liked getting there. I think I am the same – maybe you think I’m mad!Buildings! I love looking at buildings, old, new, big, small. I am constantly looking around me at what we can call “the built environment”. It never ceases to interest me. I like buildings which are plain and simple, rather than ornate and highly decorated. Here are some of my favourites. The first one has a special significance for me. I’ll explain why a little later, but here’s the picture. Let me know what you think, do you like it, do you hate it, does it “say” anything to you? Below is a lovely old house which was used in a TV series here in Britain. All the rooms are very low, and tall people have to bend down to walk inside. It is held together by wooden beams. Any comments? Do you think you could live there?
This is a “pavilion” on the south coast of Britain near where my mother lives. Any idea when it might have been built? Try to guess. Again, let me know your feelings about this building. In fact do buildings make you feel anything? I could spend days looking at buildings! If you want to see some more British buildings take a look at this BBC website.http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/architecture/I said I would explain the first picture. Well it’s here that I volunteer once a week. What do I do? I am guide, and I show people the house and tell them about its history. I do not get paid for being a guide. It was home to a well known architect, who built some very large and modern buildings here. What is interesting about the house is that it contains all the original possessions of the architect and his family, so it is like going into a real home. Many people comment that it feels like his family has just left the house very recently, so it is more than a museum, it is an “experience”. Of course now I want to hear all about your passions! They may be the romantic sort, or passions about the things you love to do in your spare time to help you through “the daily grind.”Whatever it is, let us chat about it.Have fun, and remember if things haven’t gone well for you this Valentines Day don’t worry, there are plenty more in the future!
