Hello and hope you are all well. Spring is slowly and quietly coming back to us here in London. More sunny days, higher temperatures, I can’t wait till it gets hot again after a long cold winter! In the last blog I talked about Fairtrade, and today I’m going to talk about free-range 放养的家禽。 I saw a message left by 庄主 explaining what free-range is, and it is correct. Free-range means farm animals are allowed to move around outside and not kept in cages.

Free-range chicken and free-range eggs are the most commonly seen products. These products compared to the non free-rangeones are more expensive. But why buy free-range chickens when you can get the same birds at cheaper prices?Let’s first look at what happens to the chickens. If you buy standard cheap chicken, the bird on your plate will have lived its whole life indoors, crammed in with thousands of otherones. These chickens are bred 喂养 to grow to slaughter 屠杀,屠宰 weight 重量 in less than 40 days, its bones 骨头, heart and lungs 肺 often can't keep up 跟上变化,causing heart problems 心脏疾病。If you buy eggs from caged hens 圈养的母鸡, the hen who laid 下蛋them will have lived its life in a small cage 笼子; in other words, these chickens were never given the change to flap their wings 拍打翅膀, to go outside or just have a normal life. However on the other hand, if you choose free-range chickens, the bird you eat will have had the chance to live outdoors 户外, grow slower, with more space 空间, daylight 日光 and the chance to lead a more natural life.

So what’s good for us then? Research shows that free-range chicken contains significantly less fat than those are not free-ranged. Organic free-range chicken contains around 25% less fat 脂肪。So would you want to eat eggs that are laid by happy chickens? Are you prepared to pay more to save the caged hens? I’m looking forward to hearing from you.Best wishes,Feifei
