Today is the 29th of February, yes an extra day in Feb, which means this year is a leap year 闰年。In this week’s Take Away English, Jo talked about ‘leap year’, so here it is.
As I was listening to Jo’s Take Away, a question came to my mind, what do people do if their birthdays are on the 29th of February? Does that mean theyonly get to celebrate their birthdayonce every four years? A person born on the February 29th may be called a ‘leapling’, they usually celebrate their birthday on February 28th or March 1st. For legal purposes, their legal 法定的，合法的 birthdays depend on how different laws apply.A very well-known tradition 传统 of leap day is that women are allowed to propose 求婚 to their boyfriends. It’s actually the first time I heard about this tradition. Back in the 13th Century, Scotland passed a law 通过了一项法律 allowing women to propose to men in a leap year; if the men refused 拒绝，they had to pay a fine! I can’t imagine what it will happen if this law still exists.Leap year also means there will be 366 days. Some people are saying that we should have every February 29th as public holiday, because we are not being paid for working an extra day in a leap year.
