I am still in Xi'an working on the CCTV Star of Outlook English Competition of ShaanXi Province.
It's a real shame that a lot of you have not been to Xi'an before, but I am sure sooner or later you'll make your way here for a visit.
One of the landmarks of Xi'an is the Bell Tower. It stands at the intersection where the North, South, East and West Streets meet. You can probably tell by its name the Bell Tower (Zhong Lou), that it was used as a clock in ancient China to tell the time.
The Bell Tower
Ever since it was built, the tower has become the symbol of Xi'an. It is now a historic monument in ShaanXi Province.
The Bell Tower was first built in the year 1384, it used to be located in the centre of the city. The tower was moved to its present location in 1582 due to the expansion of the city.
The Bell Tower
The tower is square-shaped which occupies an area of 1337.4 square metres. It is 8.6 metres high and 35.5 metres wide.
The municipal government of Xi'an has launched three repair programmes on the tower since 1949. The tower now looks as great and magnificent as when it was first built hundreds of years ago.
The Bell Tower
You can go up the tower using its wooden stairs, that way you will be able to get quite a view of the city. If you are lucky to go on a sunny day, you might even see the Zhongnan Mountain which is in the far south suburb of the city.
You can't miss the Bell Tower if you come to Xi'an.
