Hello there. It's Feifei again. Thanks very much for your messages and hope you are all having a lovely week.

The weather here in London is still very chilly, lots of showers with the occasion sunshine. In China we say 二八月,乱穿衣。You see it all here in London, some are wearing very summery clothes and people like me are still wrapped up in a winter coat.

We talked about the 2008 London Marathon last time and today let's look at some running idioms.

To run before you can walk – this idiom means to try and do something difficult before you have even the basic skills. My mum told me that I was one of those children who desperately wanted to run around before I’d even learnt how to walk.

To hit the ground running – when I first saw this idiom I thought it meant if you ran very fast and then fell over and hit the ground; but this idiom actually means to immediately work very hard at a new activity and do it well, so the meaning is positive.

To be up and running -  means to be established and working. For example you could say, the new university application system is up and running.

To be in the running – means to be in a good position to win or achieve something. So we could say Liu Xiang is definitely in the running to win a gold medal in the hurdles in the Beijing Olympics.

To run rings around someone – means to have more skill and intelligence than someone else.

To give someone a run for their money – means to be a very strong competitor against someone who is expected to win a competition or achieve something well. For example, China has a very strong Olympic team. We will certainly give the other countries a run for their money.

Try to use these idioms every day; remember practice makes perfect or at least better!

Best wishes,

Feifei
