Hello again. It’s nearly the weekend, are you doing anything exciting?

As I told you in the last blog, I was at my graduation ceremony yesterday. It was a lovely day and I had a fantastic time!

Me in the gown

It seems that not many of you have had a formal graduation before, although I have to admit that my Chinese graduation was very different from the one I had yesterday.

In the UK, if a student wants to attend a graduation ceremony, he or she will be expected to hire a gown (表示职业或地位的)长服,长袍 (like the one I’m wearing in the picture) and wear it to your ceremony.

In the ceremony, depending on what degree you’ll receive, whether a doctoral also know as a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) 博士, a postgraduate also known as a Master’s 硕士, an undergraduate also known as a Bachelor’s 学士 or a Diploma (不授予学位的)文凭证书, you’d be expected to do different things.

If you are being awarded 被颁发给 a doctorate 博士学位, then you need to walk up to the conferrer 授予人, the person who officially presents your award, usually the chancellor 校长 or the vice chancellor of the university, then he or she will touch your head with a cap 帽子, shake your hand and say a few words.

If you are being awarded a Master’s degree, the conferrer will shake your hands and say a few words.

If you are being awarded to a Bachelor’s degree or a diploma, the conferrer will shake your hands.

The ceremony usually lasts about an hour and then most people will leave the venue and have their photos taken with families, friends, lecturers and professors. One of the most famous things that people do is to throw their mortar boards 学位帽 into the sky.

There are drink receptions, lunches or dinners after to celebrate this amazing achievement.

Graduation ceremonies in the UK are not compulsory 义务的, 强制性的 so a lot of the international students don’t normally come back for it. I am very glad I went yesterday, it was really worth it and it was one of the happiest days of my life.

Have you been to a graduation before? Was it in China or somewhere else in the world? You can leave a message on the blog and send us some pictures of you or you can email us and tell us about it. Our email is [ft=,3,.

Have a nice weekend.

Best wishes,

Feifei
