Hello! My name is Helen, and it’s my turn to write about what’s happening in London this week on QQ Blog.

For the past nine months, I’ve been away from the Beeb (BBC) on maternity leave 产假. Since I got back three weeks ago, I’ve discovered that there’re lots of exciting projects happening in BBC Learning English. And I’m very glad to be doing our QQ blog this week. Although I have to tell you that this is all completely new to me, so please bear with me请对我耐心一点while I get the hang of this 慢慢熟悉.

Most schools in the UK broke up 放假了 for the summer last Friday. And most students won’t be going back till early September. I think one of the best things about being a student is the long summer holiday. On average, a secondary school student in the UK would have around 15 weeks of holiday per year. If you decide to go to university, then you could find yourself not having to touch the books for nearly 6 months each year. That’s an awful a lot of free time students have on their hands. Is it the same in China? Do students there have that much free time?

So I hear you asking what do the students in the UK do with their extra long holidays. For many students who are over the age of 16, a summer job would be a great way to earn some money. The UK government has rules to ensure that workers are paid properly; it’s called the National Minimum Wage 全国最低工资标准. So if you’re between 16 and 18 years old, then the minimum your boss has to pay you is **3.40 (RMB 44.20) per hour, and if you’re over 18, that rate goes up to **4.60 (RMB 59.80) per hour and anyone over 21 is entitled to **5.52 (RMB 71.76) per hour.

The kind of jobs students do are varied, from stacking supermarket shelves 在超市工作to office temping 在公司里当临时工. I remember my very first job was working as a waitress in a small BBQ restaurant. I was 16 years old and ready to take on new challenges. I absolutely loved the whole experience. I learned a lot about customer service, met interesting customers and earned enough money all by myself to go to Canada to see my cousin.

So do you remember your first job? What was it like? I’d love to hear from you.

Wishing you all a wonderful start to the summer holiday.

Helen
